United States Consulate General, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Inspired by the rich traditions of Northern Thailand, the landscape design is guided by three key design drivers: an emphasis on a spirit of welcome and respect, the use of traditional northern Thai landscape organization, and elevating the importance of native vegetation in urban landscapes.

The site is organized into a series of outdoor rooms that create episodic and deeply sensory experiences. This is done through the manipulation of grade with site walls, the use of vegetation to define edges, the interplay of light and shadow, the contrast of the built and the natural, and the use of indirect sight lines in the entry and arrival experience.

Trees and vegetation native to the upland forests around Chiang Mai have been integrated into the design to create a sense of place that feels distinctly of northern Thailand. Increased development has affected native forests significantly, and the design aspires to be a model for the incorporation of culturally and ecologically significant trees into the urban landscape.
