Theater Commons
at Seattle Center

This project redefines a key entry into the Seattle Center campus while treating stormwater. A wide expanse of asphalt is replaced with a treelined, cobbled walking street. The street passes through a re-graded landscape  that unites this formerly fragmented, “back of house” space between the renowned Intiman and Seattle Repertory Theaters.

On-site stormwater, as well as stormwater from the theater buildings, is collected and filtered in the landscape. The Seattle Repertory Theatre, formerly detached from Mercer Street, was brought to the street with a new pedestrian entry with an extended entry canopy and wall by Weinstein A|U.

The planting, showcasing both native and western-American vegetation, was a collaboration with Seattle Center staff, who developed the plant pallette and layout, installed the plants, and continue to monitor and maintain the installation.
