Corixa Headquarters

In downtown Seattle, two small rooftop terraces are designed as sweeping, outdoor extensions of the ninth-floor social spaces of Corixa, a leading-edge bio-tech firm. Both terraces are designed as subtly warped or uplifted extensions of the interior floor, composed of distinctive Jarrah wood. Though all soil was required to sit above the roof deck, no raised planter edges are visible in the project.

In the South Terrace, the eye is lifted with the curling plane of deck and landform, to a planted rise that softly edges the view of the Seattle skyline. Finely textured silver-blue plants are layered to blur the edge between terrace and sky, shimmering in the slightest breeze. Flexible in use, the simple deck allows one person to comfortably enjoy the space alone or a group of people to gather for an informal evening after work.

For the smaller North Terrace, a similar, subtly sculpted form is composed of turf and decking. The entire surface is used for circulation, outdoor meals, and rest. In early spring the turf is transformed by an informal sprinkling of miniature daffodils.
